5 Things to Do in Scottsdale This Weekend

October 8, 2020 Vacation Rental Insider Destinations | Travelers

Enjoy a wide selection of world class golf courses in the Scottsdale area.

Unfortunately, Covid-19 has put a damper on many Scottsdale-area activities. Pastimes like watching live sports, seeing a movie in a theater, and attending Phoenix Symphony concerts are still a no-go. Though many live events and recreational activities are temporarily closed, we’ve compiled five fun, stress-free and safe things to do in Scottsdale.

Hike Camelback Mountain

Camelback Mountain is one of the highest peaks in Phoenix and certainly one of the most beautiful hiking spots in the city. The dramatic mountain offers spectacular views of Phoenix and has some lovely neighborhoods with beautiful surrounding homes. The 2,700 foot peak can be reached from Echo Canyon Trail, which is 1.2 miles long and is steep, but incredibly scenic. Cholla Trail on the eastside of Camelback Mountain offers a more gradual incline, but still boasts great views. If you’re searching for a more beginner-friendly trail, you’ll enjoy Bobby’s Rock Loop at Camelback’s base. During the summer months, due to the desert heat, it’s advised to enjoy the trails in the early morning or late evening. However, one of the benefits of Scottsdale in the spring time, fall, and winter is that the pleasant weather that allows for a hike any time of the day. Because of the stunning views and opportunity for fresh air and exercise, hiking up Camelback Mountain can really be a treat.

Beautiful Camelback Mountain provides amazing Phoenix valley views from the top.

Go Golfing

Scottsdale has always been recognized for its world class golf resorts. In fact, with difficulty levels ranging from beginner to expert, the Valley of the Sun is home to several hundred top-rated courses.

For an authentic Phoenician golf experience, head to the Arizona Biltmore Golf Club. The club is part of the Arizona Biltmore Resort in downtown Phoenix. Movie stars, politicians and business-men/women have enjoyed this course for many years. It was constructed in 1928 and known as “the granddaddy” of Phoenix country clubs. The Arizona Biltmore boasts two 18-hole PGA Championship courses, a driving range, pro shop, putting green and full-service restaurant. Because of the popularity of this course, reserve your tee times a few days in advance online at the golf course’s website.

Another great course to visit is the Phoenician Golf Club at the base of Camelback Mountain. The Papago Golf Course is always a treat for the avid golfer. Nestled among the red buttes of Papago Park, this renowned course has a variety of unique holes which climb the mountain and back down again.

Phoenix Zoo features an amazing variety of animals and habitats that the entire family will enjoy.

Visit Phoenix Zoo

The Phoenix Zoo, which is open to the public currently, features hundreds of animals in their exhibits. The Tropics, African, Arizona, and Children’s trails provide a great way to observe the animals in various habitats. Don’t forget the encounters at Monkey Village, which is popular with family members of all ages. Other popular areas include The Giraffe Encounter, Stingray Bay, Camel Rides and the Red Barn Petting Zoo. Guests can also enjoy watching a movie at their 4-D Theater, riding through the park on the Safari Cruiser or picking their favorite animal on the Endangered Species Carousel.

Tour Cultural Attractions

Arizona has many venues with culture and art like Frank Lloyd Wright’s striking Taliesin West. The Taliesin West offers various guided tours that feature the architecture and history of the property. Their Insights Tour will lead you through Wright’s private quarters and living room, which is worth viewing if you have the spare time. The city offers a behind-the-scenes tour of Taliesin West’s “Garden Room,” the Music Pavilion, and the Drafting Studio. Architecture enthusiasts will enjoy the 3-hour tour, which is not recommended for children under the age of 13. However, if you are interested in Wright’s stunning designs, it is certainly an enjoyable tour.

Another favorite cultural attraction amongst visitors is the Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix, which features over 7,000 instruments from almost 200 countries. A popular current exhibit is the Congo Masks and Music: Masterpieces from Central Africa, which displays over 150 masks, instruments and costumes in their authentic performance contexts.

Lastly, a visit to Desert Botanical Garden is always time well spent. Visitors enjoy strolling through 140 acres of plant and flower displays with garden trails and a wide variety of tours and exhibits. A visitor favorite is the current Wild Rising by Cracking Art, which is an installation of more than 1,000 animal sculptures made from colorful, recycled plastic. Wrap the day up with a bite to eat at Gertrude’s or find a gift for someone special in your life at the garden shop, which always has treats and unique items from the Botanical Museum.

Despite the pandemic, Scottsdale is a great place to visit and offers unique opportunities for recreation and adventure. If you’re looking to get out of the house and enjoy Scottsdale’s mild fall weather, the above activities will provide you with plenty to do and see!

May 23, 2018 Vacation Rental Insider Destinations

Memorial Day Weekend is the unofficial kickoff to summer. Here in Scottsdale, the festivities extend across the region as people fire up their barbeques and hop in their pools.

A typical Arizona Memorial Day is a mixture of patriotic celebrations and diverse activities that are found nowhere else in the country. If you’re an outdoors fanatic, pack a picnic and venture up Camelback Mountain for extraordinary views of the city and Sonora Desert. Adventurists can soar even higher with Rainbow Ryders Hot Air Balloon Ride Company, which floats them over the countryside and urban centers. If the waterways beckon you, hop aboard the comfortable Desert Belle and cruise Saguaro Lake in style. Urban dwellers can still enjoy fresh air too. Meander through the Desert Botanical Garden to observe some remarkable floral and foliage displays. You might also tour central Phoenix by bike, thanks to the Grid Bike Share program. It features kiosks throughout the city from which you can rent lime green bikes and pedal your way to exciting destinations.

This weekend is also the date for Phoenix’s Caribbean Carnival and Parade. The city comes alive with colorful stilt walkers, steel-drum bands, and all the sights and sounds you’d find on the islands themselves. There’s plenty of tasty Caribbean foods in the carnival village, including jerk chicken and frosty beverages (umbrellas optional).

Embark on an Amazing Sightseeing Adventure in Arizona

March 28, 2018 Vacation Rental Insider Travelers

Springtime in Arizona is simply delightful. With daytime temps in the 80s that dip to moderate 60s come evening, the amazing Arizona weather and arid climate are perfect for any activity you might have planned. Even better, this state averages over 300 days of sunshine, so there’s very little chance it will rain on your vacation parade.

At Holiday Rental, we welcome people from all over to plan their stays at one of our Scottsdale luxury vacation homes. You’ll be close to plenty of activities and thriving districts with ample shopping, dining, and nightlife – including Old Town Scottsdale. Let’s envision your options for sightseeing in AZ.

Verde Valley Wine Trail Tour

If your idea of a glorious vacation includes indulging in the fruit of the vines, you’ll want to spend a day on the Verde Valley Wine Trail. Stop at one of the amazing wineries along the trail to sample some buttery Chardonnay or robust Cabernet. Whether you’re a seasoned sommelier or a novice to wine tasting, you’ll be enchanted by the offerings. Multiple wineries can be found in Jerome, Clarkdale, Cottonwood, Page Springs, and Sedona. Plan a wine-tasting adventure to suit your palate and get ready to sip away.

Sedona

Famous for its red-rock formations, Sedona is rapidly becoming recognized as a vacation destination. The best part is that it’s only two hours north of Scottsdale and the modern vacation homes located there. In addition to the natural wonders this region offers, you’ll want to reserve time to explore the 89A shopping district with everything from unique boutiques to art galleries – not to mention exquisite restaurants where you can grab a bite and experience local cuisine. Stop by Tlaquepaque Arts & Crafts Village, known for Native American art and wearables, or rent a jeep for off-road exploration.

Grand Canyon

Would a trip to Arizona be complete without a tour of the expansive Grand Canyon? We think not. The South Rim is a short distance from Phoenix and Scottsdale, with numerous overlooks to take in the breathtaking depth of this natural wonder. If you’re up for a hike, there are plenty of trails to suit any ability. Hermit Road offers a scenic drive if you’d prefer to peruse the area from your vehicle. Of course, there are multiple helicopter tours if you desire a more daring overview. People looking to learn about the region will appreciate the Geological Museum at Grand Canyon National Park. You might even take in a film on the canyon at the IMAX theater located in the park.

Payson

Have a break from the arid heat and visit Payson, located in Central Arizona, at the base of Mongollon Rim. Experience two different climates 30 miles in either direction. The tall Ponderosa Pine forests will delight you from 7,500 feet at Mongollon Rim, just north of Payson. Visit Tonto National Forest and take a dip in the crystal clear mountain lakes. Head south and you’ll be in the midst of the desert. Boaters will love Roosevelt Lake, which is just south of the Payson area as well. The unique forest-meets-desert experience is not the only attraction in this adorable town. Visit the historic district lined with antique shops, art galleries, and dining options galore.

Flagstaff

History buffs! Gather your troops and head north to Flagstaff, where you’ll witness the Walnut Canyon National Monument and Wupatki National Monument, as well as other notable sites. Be amazed by the 900-year-old cinder cone found at the Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument. The wide-open desert sky allows stargazers to pick out their favorite celestial bodies at the Lowell Observatory. Hikers will not be disappointed with the trail options around the area, including those found at Coconino National Forest. Don’t forget to stop along Route 66, where Flagstaff’s historic district is located. Pop in to Monte Vista, a haunted hotel, if you dare, and check into Room 305 for a paranormal experience.
